Mastering Your Sermon’s Ending: 11 Phrases to Land the Plane Smoothly

Content Prep

Have you ever preached your heart out only to bomb the ending? I have!

When I first started speaking on stages, my biggest fears were going blank or tripping up the stairs. As I gained experience, those worries faded and were replaced by concerns about the depth and humor of my stories. Eventually, my focus shifted to ensuring my messages hit the theological mark—a challenge that still gives me pause.

Every speaker has something they’re hyper-focused on getting right. Often, we’re so preoccupied with these details that we overlook one crucial aspect until it’s too late: effectively ending our message by transitioning it into a ministry moment. Sound familiar? You’ve planned your sermon meticulously but find yourself circling the “airport,” unsure how to land the plane. Don’t worry—you’re not alone!

How Do I Effectively End My Message?

You might be thinking, “I’ve given everything to ensure the message connects, is humorous, teaches the Bible well, and brings the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Now you want me to move the audience to action too?!” Yes, I do. Action is the whole reason we preach.

Effective message endings can make or break your ministry moment. Below are my TOP 11 phrases to help you transition your message into a ministry moment that effectively lands the plane and moves your audience to action.

11 Phrases to Effectively End Your Message

“Let me end with this…”

Sign your audience that you’re winding down and prepare them for what’s next.

“Stand with me as I wrap this up…”

Physical action primes spiritual action. Get them standing, then lead them to further steps.

“I want to pray this over you as I finish my message…”

Prayer is a powerful and clear way to transition your message to a strong close.

“Are you ready to take a step of faith…”

Reengage their attention by inviting them to reflect on taking tangible action.

“If you’re wondering how to apply this…”

Help them feel seen by guiding them to practical application.

“Let’s not just be hearers but also doers of the Word this week…”

Call them to action, clearly explaining the one step you want them to take.

“Ask yourself…”

Encourage reflection by prompting them to question their own hearts.

“In closing…”

A simple signal that a landing is coming. Summarize your main thought here.

“I invite you to join me in…”

Personal invitations foster trust and inclusion, multiplying your influence.

“Take this challenge today…”

End with a challenge, motivating them to rise to the occasion.

“Here’s what I want you to take away if you remember nothing else…”

Repeat your key point to ensure it sticks.

To ensure a smooth landing in your next message, you must have a PLAN. Your sermon outline should be as detailed about the ending as it is about the beginning. The less you prepare, the more you’ll ramble.

I didn't come from a ministry background, but when I married my husband in 2010 with an Interior Design degree from LSU and no seminary training, he welcomed me into the ministry. In 2012, a prophetic couple told me that I had the anointing of Lydia, and God wanted to use it to funnel millions through the Kingdom by starting online courses and classes. At this time, I had NO dream or even thought of Let’s Echo, but I received the word from the Lord.

Today, I'm witnessing that prophetic word coming true. You are a prophetic word fulfilled and a dream come true!
