Discover the 4 Common Types of Sermon Outlines

Content Prep, Practical Tips

Ever wonder why certain preachers resonate with you? It’s not just their charisma—it’s often their sermon outline. Whether you’re a fan of Charlotte Gambill’s captivating narrative style or another preacher’s approach, understanding sermon styles can help you find your voice in preaching.

Content Prep - Four Types of Sermon Outlines and How to Choose One

4 Common Types of Sermon Outlines:

Expository Preaching

Expository preaching focuses on unpacking the meaning of a biblical text in its original context. It’s all about letting Scripture speak for itself.

Pros:

      • It forces you to tackle tough texts.
      • Anchors your message in biblical authority.

Cons:

      • Can become too focused on one passage, neglecting broader biblical teachings.
      • May lack practical application.

Textual (Exegetical) Preaching

Like expository preaching, textual sermons focus on a specific passage but with a tighter scope.

Pros:

      • Easy to follow, verse by verse.
      • Prevents wandering off-topic.

Cons:

      • Might miss the bigger picture.
      • Can lack depth in Bible study.

Narrative (Inductive) Preaching

Narrative sermons weave together stories and ideas to arrive at a central biblical truth. Two popular methods are Lowry’s Loop and Andy Stanley’s “Communicating for a Change.”

Pros:

      • Ideal for biblical stories with a single key message.
      • Engages the audience emotionally.

Cons:

      • Can get off track if not carefully managed.
      • Not suitable for all types of Scripture, like the Epistles.

Topical Preaching

Topical sermons focus on a specific theme or subject, like forgiveness or identity.

Pros:

      • Accessible to unbelievers.
      • Perfect for holiday-themed sermons.

Cons:

      • Can become opinion-based rather than Scripture-based.
      • Risk of misusing Scripture to fit a theme.

Bottom Line: All four preaching styles are effective. The key is to choose the one that best suits your message and audience. Practice and refine your chosen style to make your sermons impactful and powerful.

I didn't come from a ministry background, but when I married my husband in 2010 with an Interior Design degree from LSU and no seminary training, he welcomed me into the ministry. In 2012, a prophetic couple told me that I had the anointing of Lydia, and God wanted to use it to funnel millions through the Kingdom by starting online courses and classes. At this time, I had NO dream or even thought of Let’s Echo, but I received the word from the Lord.

Today, I'm witnessing that prophetic word coming true. You are a prophetic word fulfilled and a dream come true!
